Most roofs in Brighton's suburbs are tiled. The 1930s semis of Patcham, Westdene and Hollingbury carry plain tiles or early concrete tiles, the post-war estates of Woodingdean and Moulsecoomb carry concrete interlocking tiles, and newer homes from Saltdean to Portslade carry slate-effect tiles. Each one fails in its own way, and each one needs the right tile to match.
Concrete interlocking tiles last a long time but their nibs and nails give out, so they slip. Plain clay tiles hang on pegs or nibs that crumble with age, and a plain tile roof needs far more tiles per square metre. Slate-effect tiles are thin and look sharp but crack if they are walked on carelessly. We lay all three new, re-tile whole slopes, and match and replace individual tiles in an existing roof.
On a re-tile, the old tiles and battens come off, new membrane and battens go on, and the new tiles are nailed and clipped to the current fixing standard, which matters on a windy coast. Ridges, hips and verges go on with dry fix systems.

Yes, for most roofs. Many concrete tile profiles are still made, and reclaimed plain tiles are available for older roofs. Where a perfect match is not possible, we re-tile the whole slope so it looks right.
Concrete tiles cost less and cover more roof per tile. Clay plain tiles hold their colour for decades and suit older and conservation-area houses. We show you both.
