Ridge tiles and verges on most older roofs are bedded in mortar. Sun, frost and wind crack the mortar, it falls out in lumps, and the ridge tiles start to rock. In a gale on the coast, a loose ridge tile is the first thing to come off.
Repointing buys a few years. A dry ridge system fixes each ridge tile mechanically, with screws and clips onto a ventilated roll and a timber ridge batten, so there is nothing left to crack. A dry verge does the same along the gable edge with interlocking plastic caps clipped to the tiles. Both add ventilation and both meet the current fixing standard.
