Moss holds water against the tiles like a sponge. In winter that water freezes and cracks the tile surface, and the moss itself lifts the tile edges so rain blows underneath. When it dies back in a dry summer, it falls into the gutters and blocks them.
We scrape the moss off by hand, tile by tile, working down from the ridge, and clear everything that falls into the gutters. No high-pressure jet wash, which strips the surface off concrete tiles and drives water into the roof.
